Moving from GoDaddy

Three ways to do it. Most people pick the first one: about 10 minutes, and nothing goes down while it switches over.

Never send us your password. Every option below uses GoDaddy's own invite or settings screens, so you stay in control and can remove us any time.

1. Point your domain to us Recommended

Your domain stays at GoDaddy (you keep paying them for it). We host the new site. You just swap two settings.

Before you start: we'll email you two nameservers that look like xxxx.ns.cloudflare.com. Have that email open.

  1. Sign in to GoDaddy Domain Portfolio and select the domain
  2. Select DNS, then Nameservers
  3. Choose 'Use your own nameservers' (I'll use my own)
  4. Enter the two Cloudflare nameservers, click Save, then Continue
  5. Verify identity if Domain Protection is on
  6. Allow up to 48 hours (usually under an hour)

Official help page: www.godaddy.com/help/change-my-domain-nameservers-664

Changes usually show up within a few hours, at most 24 to 48. Your old site keeps working until the switch finishes.

2. Move your domain to us

We take over the domain itself, so you get one bill (ours) for website, hosting and domain. It stays registered in your name and we renew it at cost.

  1. Sign in to GoDaddy and open Domain Portfolio
  2. Select the domain
  3. Under Transfer choose Transfer to Another Registrar (GoDaddy's checklist unlocks the domain, turns off Domain Privacy and downgrades Domain Protection)
  4. Click Continue with transfer and verify identity if Domain Protection was on (2SV code or one-time password emailed to the account)
  5. Click 'Click here to see Authorization Code' then Copy to Clipboard (GoDaddy also emails it to the registrant email)
  6. Give us the code; we start the transfer at Cloudflare Registrar (domain must already be a Cloudflare zone)
  7. Approve the transfer when GoDaddy asks (approving speeds it up)

Timing: Cannot transfer within 60 days of new registration, a transfer, or a contact-info change if the registrant opted into the 60-day lock. Bundled domains: 120 days from registration. Typical transfer 5-7 days. .uk uses an IPS tag, no auth code.

Then send us: the authorization code (also called the EPP or transfer code). Paste it in your dashboard or reply to our email. Don't post it anywhere public.

3. Keep GoDaddy, let us in to fix or rebuild

Best if you only want fixes or a rebuild and want to stay on GoDaddy. You invite us; we never need your login.

GoDaddy calls it: Delegate Access · Choose: Products & Domains (with domain 'management' actions; add 'transfer' actions only if we will start the transfer). Avoid 'Products, Domains & Purchase'.

Invite this email: hello@advancingwebsites.com

  1. Sign in to GoDaddy and open the Delegate Access page (account.godaddy.com/access)
  2. In 'People who can access my account' click Invite to Access
  3. Enter our name and email
  4. Choose the access level (Products & Domains) and click Invite
  5. We accept the emailed invitation (invite expires in 48-72 hours; you can resend)
