Moving from Squarespace (incl. former Google Domains)

Three ways to do it. Most people pick the first one: about 10 minutes, and nothing goes down while it switches over.

Never send us your password. Every option below uses Squarespace (incl. former Google Domains)'s own invite or settings screens, so you stay in control and can remove us any time.

1. Point your domain to us Recommended

Your domain stays at Squarespace (incl. former Google Domains) (you keep paying them for it). We host the new site. You just swap two settings.

Before you start: we'll email you two nameservers that look like xxxx.ns.cloudflare.com. Have that email open.

  1. Go to account.squarespace.com/domains and select the domain
  2. Open DNS, then Domain Nameservers
  3. Choose Use Custom Nameservers
  4. Enter password or 2FA, accept that DNSSEC will be disabled
  5. Enter at least two nameservers (the two Cloudflare ones) and Save
  6. Allow up to 48 hours. To keep Squarespace DNS and only add records instead: DNS > pencil icon on a record to edit

Changes usually show up within a few hours, at most 24 to 48. Your old site keeps working until the switch finishes.

2. Move your domain to us

We take over the domain itself, so you get one bill (ours) for website, hosting and domain. It stays registered in your name and we renew it at cost.

  1. Open account.squarespace.com/domains and select the domain
  2. Remove DNSSEC if enabled
  3. Turn the Domain Lock toggle off
  4. Click Request transfer code, enter password/2FA, Continue, then Ok
  5. Code is emailed from no-reply@squarespace.com ('Auth code for yourdomain.com') to the registrant contact within 24 hours
  6. Give us the code; start the transfer at Cloudflare Registrar
  7. Watch for the 'New domain transfer request' email from customercare@squarespace.com (5 days to cancel via Review request; if ignored the transfer proceeds)

Timing: Can take up to 15 days. 60-day registration lock, 60-day transfer lock (domains transferred in) and 60-day registrant-contact-change lock can block the Domain Lock toggle ('Can't unlock domain'). Only the latest requested code works. Cannot change DNS/nameservers during a pending transfer. Whois privacy usually need not be disabled.

Then send us: the authorization code (also called the EPP or transfer code). Paste it in your dashboard or reply to our email. Don't post it anywhere public.

3. Keep Squarespace (incl. former Google Domains), let us in to fix or rebuild

Best if you only want fixes or a rebuild and want to stay on Squarespace (incl. former Google Domains). You invite us; we never need your login.

Squarespace (incl. former Google Domains) calls it: Permissions & Ownership > Invite Contributor (site) and Permissions > Invite domain manager (domain not billed with a site) · Choose: Site: Administrator (needed to edit pages, styles, code injection, settings and domains; Website editor can only edit content). Domain: Domain manager (can edit DNS, connect domain, start transfer away; cannot see billing).

Invite this email: hello@advancingwebsites.com

  1. Site: you open the site's Permissions & Ownership panel (app: More > Settings > Permissions)
  2. Click Invite Contributor, enter our name and email
  3. Switch on Administrator (or the needed toggles) and click Invite
  4. Domain only: you open account.squarespace.com/domains, clicks the domain, then Permissions
  5. Click Invite domain manager, enter name and email
  6. We accept the email (log in to or create a Squarespace account; use incognito if logged into the wrong account)
